Sea Cider

A minimalist, rustic space created to celebrate community gatherings and the beauty of the orchard.

Sea Cider

Sea Cider is a farm-based cidery on the Saanich Peninsula of Vancouver Island, surrounded by orchards and forest. After years of using a temporary tent for social gatherings, the client needed a new event space to host celebrations of all kinds, year-round.

Bringing a subtle sense of newness to a countryside classic.

To capture the natural setting of Sea Cider’s acreage, as well as meld any new designs with  that of the existing building, the Cascadia Architect team opted to take a refined approach in order to preserve a sense of classic, yet rustic tranquility.

The sense of being in the garden under a glowing canopy was something the client loved about the tent, so we used carefully hidden lighting and skylights to invoke this same ethereal feeling.

Exposed light-weight wood framing was chosen for the pavilion structure to evoke the working, functional character of the cidery barn. The concrete floor, warmed with integral radiant heating, combines high occupant comfort with durability and authenticity of materials, and together with careful organization of mechanical ventilation and electrical systems, creates a clean, minimalist interior that celebrates the wood structure.

The large window at the end of the space overlooks lush orchards, and provides expansive views of both the Haro Strait and Mt. Baker beyond.
