Bio

Carrie Smart is a registered architect and a LEED accredited professional. She completed an honours degree in fine arts at the University of Victoria prior to completing a professional architecture degree from the University of Waterloo.

Carrie’s passion for architecture centres around its ability to make a difference to community, in creative, beautiful and engaging ways. Carrie has worked in architecture in Victoria since 2001. She is passionate about public spaces that serve all ages and abilities, sustainable living, resilient communities, affordable housing and aging in place. Carrie has worked with Cascadia Architects since 2020.

Do you have any out-of-office roles that you’re passionate about?

Dance Victoria Board Director. I am an active volunteer in the community and love to advocate for community and climate related initiatives.

In addition to this, I am looking forward to continued and expanded involvement within my community through the work I will be doing as an elected Municipal Councillor for the District of Oak Bay.

What specific interests within the field of architecture do you have?

I am interested in public spaces that serve all ages, sustainable living, regenerative design, inclusivity, community impact and affordable housing.

Are there specific books for schools of thought in architecture that inspire you?

A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction by Christopher Alexander

Is there an architecturally significant city you would like to visit?

I would love to visit Paris in order to experience the European density and culture of the City.
